Why Shiva is called Neelkanth?Neelakantha (Neela-Kantha) means Blue-Necked..Neelkanth- the Blue throated One”Because #Shiva consumed Halahala, the most Deadly Poison to save the entire Universe from getting Destroyed Once upon a time, the Devas (the Hindu demi-gods or deities) were harassed so much by the Danavas (They get their name as being the descendants of Kashyapa by his wife Danu.. These Danavas were actually a class of mythological giants and personifications of the Aborigines of India. They are depicted to be the permanent enemies of Devas and are branded to be all bad and the Devas are all gold in Puranas and elsewhere.) that they fled and took refuge in Vishnu praying for protection and a satisfactory resolution to their problem.. They had a discussion and the Devas received certain advice from Hari (another common designation of Vishnu). Under Hari’s instructions, the Devas cast varieties of medicinal herbs into Kshirasagar or Dadhisagar (the ocean of milk). For churning the ocean, they took the mountain Mandara to serve as the stick and the serpent Vasuki (Ananta) for the rope and then churned the ocean for Amrita, the beverage of immortality. . To carry out this design, they made temporary peace with the Daityas (demons). The conspiracy was to make use of the labor of Daityas for churning the ocean and once the ambrosia is obtained, deprive the Daityas of Amrita through a trickery. The assembled gods stood at the tail of the serpent, the Danavas and Daityas at the head and neck of Vasuki. Hari/Vishnu himself took the form of a tortoise and became the pivot on which the mountain whirled. As a result of this “cosmic” churning, many things were produced in the following order: Surabhi (a fabulous cow of plenty, daughter of Daksha and wife of Kashyapa, mother of cattle), Varuni (the goddess of wine), the celestial Parijaata tree, the Apsaras (celestial nymphs), the Moon. After these things were engendered, came the most lethal poison of the world, the Halaahala .. This Poison was about to Destroy everything; so to save mankind, Shiva volunteered to Drink it.
